India will Become a Big Dealer of Drones, Will the Picture Be Hit or Is This a Warning?

When it comes to drones, they are not an exception in today’s time, but have become a commonality in many industries worldwide. India is not an exception as well. With the increasing popularity of drones, this technology has developed into a full-blown market and it has a lot of opportunities to offer.
The drone industry presents a lot of opportunities for India. According to a new report, this industry could boost the country's manufacturing capacity by USD 23 billion by 2030. This projection is driven by rapidly growing demand for drones in sectors such as defence, agriculture, logistics and infrastructure. As per the NextGen report, drones are emerging as a vital weapon in modern warfare in India.
Role of Operation Sindoor in Increased Drone Adoption
India's Operation Sindoor, following the terrorist Pahalgam terrorist attack, played a key role in the country's adoption of drones. Although amidst this seemingly perfect picture of the drone industry, there is a concern.
Recently, former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane called for stricter oversight of drone manufacturers and users. Ankit Kumar, the CEO of Sky Air, agrees with him. He pointed out the shortcomings in India's drone tracking system.
As stated by him, instantaneous visibility is crucial. They believe that drone use is rapidly increasing, making it necessary to take strict security measures. The government should take swift action to prevent any untoward incidents.
The 'NexGen' report is based on a survey of 150 companies in 15 cities. The report states that 40% of drone companies believe that after the defence sector, the agricultural sector will have the highest demand for drones. This demand is expected to grow by the end of this decade.
Agricultural Drone Market Expected to Reach USD 5.89 Billion
According to the report, the agricultural drone market will reach USD 5.89 billion by 2030. To further quicken this growth, Delhi hosted the 'Drone International Expo 2025' from July 31 to August 1, 2025.
This NexGen exhibition showcases new drones from more than six countries, including Russia, Taiwan, Canada, Ukraine, and India. More than 50 national and international drone manufacturers will showcase their new products at the expo.
The Director of NexGen Exhibitions, Aadar Bansal, said, "The entire world witnessed the power of drones throughout Operation Sindoor." He also believes that the adoption of Indian drones will boost the "Make in India" initiative and will lead to the country's progress in many areas.
Use of Drones has Increased in Many Sectors
Drone use has increased in several sectors in India. In agriculture, drones can apply fertilizers and pesticides to fields, saving time and money. In logistics, drones can transport goods from one place to another. In infrastructure development, drones can inspect bridges and buildings.
In the defence sector, drones can be used for surveillance and attack. During Operation Sindoor, the use of drones helped locate and kill terrorists. The drone industry is a major opportunity for India. It will boost the country's economy and create new employment opportunities as well. The government is also implementing several schemes to promote the drone industry.
What is the Concern for the Drone Industry?
However, former Army Chief General Naravane has called for monitoring every drone manufacturing company and every person using them. Ankit Kumar also said that General Naravane's concerns are absolutely valid. This is vital in the current scenario. The number of drones in India is rapidly increasing. Consequently, a system is needed that can uphold airspace safety and protect the country.
Ankit stated, we don’t have a system for tracking the number of drones in the air at any given time. It's also impossible to know how many drones have permission from the government. It's also uncertain who is flying them and for what purpose. These things only turn out to be known when an incident occurs.
